Thirty-Six

CAUTIOUSLY FOLLOWING AREL from a safe distance, Tim and Kevin gave him a head start and entered the lounge a few minutes later. The place was busy, and it was easy to get lost in the crowd. After Kevin saw Arel greeting someone, he quickly found a table away from Arel’s line of vision. It was located in an area that was darker than most of the dimly lit bar. His eyes were wide with curiosity when he targeted Arel again.

“What the heck’s going on?” he asked Tim as he watched William try to force himself on Arel.

“Shh,” Tim replied. “I don’t know, but we’re not supposed to be here, remember? Let’s just observe quietly.”

“They look like they’re about the same age, but Arel’s buddy is a lot flashier.”

Tim narrowed his gaze. “Yeah, a bit of a player from what I can tell. What could he possibly want with Arel?”

Kevin frowned. “I don’t know. Our boy is a bit of a stick in the mud.”

“Maybe, but at least he’s not pushy.”

Kevin smiled. “He’s also got friends who are looking out for him.”

* * * * *

Arel sat across from William, his eyes rigidly fixed and waiting. Any old feelings of friendship disappeared as soon as he realized he couldn’t get away from William’s clutches. He was barely holding in the anger that William was able to trigger so quickly. “Why did you want to see me again?”

William leaned back, scanning him. “I’m asking myself the same question. My father would have worn a jacket like the one you’re wearing.”

Arel glanced down and gave his gray, wool blazer a quick review. “Conservative apparel never goes out of style.”

“I suppose that’s an explanation. So tell me, what have you being doing all this time? Has anything changed?”

Arel crossed his arms. “Whatever I’ve been doing, I’m happy with my life.”

“Really?”

“Just tell me why you’re here.”

William continued to stare at him with steady, unwavering eyes. “I wanted to see New York, and since you weren’t too far away—”

“Don’t give me that. It must have taken some effort on your part to find me.”

William sighed. “Why wouldn’t I? Aren’t we family?”

Arel heaved out a breath of disgust. “If you were the last person on earth, I wouldn’t consider you family.”

William let his eyes drift to his slacks. He brushed away a barely perceptible bit of dust off the knee. When he looked back at Arel, he smiled. “That makes me feel special.”

Arel put his hands on the table and leaned in to whisper. “You’re special, alright. You’re a ruthless butcher.”

William’s brows narrowed for a brief moment, but he began to laugh. “And I was thinking of the times when we considered each other chums. Oh, I’m sorry, I’m sure that term of endearment offends you too, just like my presence.”

“The sight of you is repulsive.”

William shook his head. “You’re worse off than I thought. I played out the scenarios in my mind, but I never imagined that you wouldn’t grow even the tiniest bit in all this time.
